Finding Solitude

An environmental film about saving Vancouver Island's alpine, glaciers, and forests.

About

Finding Solitude is an environmental film about saving the alpine, glaciers, and forests on Vancouver Island. Through interviews with scientific, environmental and indigenous cultural leaders the film explores the importance of alpine, glacier, and forest eco-systems. It also examines the current state of the region, and the critically important steps to obtain a sustainable future.

Unique Perspectives

Finding Solitude includes a variety of different perspectives through the interviews of a diverse group of individuals.

The traditional outlooks, spiritual connections, and land use principals of the Ahousaht, Tla-O-Qui-Aht, and K'omoks people will be discussed, in addition to the cultural history of maintaining healthy territories and what practices will need to be adopted or revitalized in order to ensure the Island's land is preserved for future generations.

Southern BC's rapidly disappearing glaciers and the actions necessary to preserve what remains are explained by SFU Glaciologist Gwenn Flowers.

Sustainable Land use practices and visions for the future will be explored with The Nature Conservancy's Emerald Edge Initiative.

THE DIRECTORS

Jaiden George

Lead Writer Director Producer Project Coordinator
Photographer

Jaiden is an outdoor photographer from Tofino, BC. A future Hereditary Chief, he hopes to continue the tradition of storytelling in a contemporary form with the accumulative narrative goal of conservation - respectfully representing spaces off the beaten path, often at risk, that would otherwise go unrepresented.

Tristan Hinder-Hohlweg

Cinematographer Co-Writer Director Producer Post Production

Tristan is a producer and filmmaker at Old Growth Media from Ucluelet, BC. His work revolves around conservation, sustainability, and documenting the raw beauty of remote locations and landscapes. His hopes are to share to his own generation and future generations the beauty of remote locations and also the immense destruction occurring around those locations, putting in perspective what needs to be protected on a global scale.

Tristan is currently in his final years at High School. He is currently working towards attending post secondary for a BFA in Film.
